(Breath of Life) Goal Setting

New Year Resolutions have become rather cliche. While it is a potentially positive ritual that our culture has adopted, it has become the ritual that everybody does yet nobody does.

The concept behind New Year Resolutions is fabulous. At a time of fresh beginnings, it presents the the opportunity to reevaluate your life and ask yourself questions such as: What changes do I want to make in my life? How do I want to grow? What do I want to learn? What impact do I want to have? What are my goals? Proverbs 29:18 tells us that, “Where there is no vision, the people will perish.”

So how do we set and maintain goals in a way that is visionary yet attainable?

1. Designate a notebook for your goals. This gives you a place to write down your goals where you will not lose them and where you can lightly journal your way through your year’s journey with the goals (simply referencing, jotting down your successes and struggles, and adjusting your goals once every month or two is all you need to do).

2. Set measurable goals. Saying that you want to become a better wife, learn photography, lose weight, or keep your house cleaner are wonderful visions but provide you with nothing tangible to complete. There is no goal to reach. You have to define the measuring stick. You do that by setting goals like writing a love note to your husband once a week, take a picture a day for a whole year, set a laundry deadline, or simply changing the way you put food on your plate. You will draw energy and motivation from seeing progress! So set your goals in small, definable increments.

3. Divide your goals into categories.

1) Mental/Intellectual

2) Relational/Social

3) Family

4) Financial

5) Physical

6) Career (as a stay-at-home mom, this looks like “Household” goals)

7) Spiritual

4. Reference, Reevaluate, and Readjust your goals periodically throughout the year. See #1.

What goals do you have?

(Breath of Life) In His Presence

When you look over your life and your interactions with God, what are some of the moments that stand out to you? What are some of the times when you most clearly felt God’s presence or that you most clearly heard from Him. Was it when you were singing? Writing? Hiking? Painting? Driving? Playing the Piano? Cooking? Making flower arrangements? Jogging?

Sometimes interaction with God flows the most easily when you are being active; doing something that you love or something creative. It is in those moments that we step outside of our expectations and rules, and we move past our critical thinking skills and our own knowledge.

Don’t assume that your time with God is limited to a quiet time. While time in the Word is so important, He has given you passions and gifts so that He may be glorified in your life. When you are using those gifts, you are in His presence. Find Him there.

(Breath of Life) Vision

“For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”

Habakkuk 2:3

If God has given you a vision, hold fast. Do not get discouraged, do not lose heart. Persevere. God has not forgotten what has birthed in you and He is actively working to bring it to pass. He does not miss deadlines, forget, make miscalculations, and cannot be proven wrong. He cannot be deterred or delayed.

Cling to God; He will not let you down.

(Breath of Life) Jeremiah 29:12-13

“Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

Jeremiah 29:12-13

God is not unreachable, elusive, or untouchable. He is ever-present, waiting for you to simply talk to him. Here he promises that if you talk to him and seek him, he can always be found. Don’t over-complicate your relationship with God. Seek him; talk to him. He’s there.

(Breath of Life) Something new

orangeflower

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

Isaiah 43: 18-19

God is doing something new and he wants you to be a part of it! Your past doesn’t matter and your current troubles are provided for. God is moving and working and wants you to join him on the adventure.

(Breath of Life) Immeasurable Value

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable then they?”

Matthew 6:26

You are of immeasurable value to our Father. He adores you! Lay your burdens at His feet and rest in Him.

(Breath of Life) Freedom

freedom“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:1

As a child of God, do you let the freedom that God has given you permeate your life and everything that you do, the way you relate to others, the way you think of yourself, and the things that you say? He has set us free! Walk in that freedom; it is the life that you have been called to.
