(Home Management) Cleaning out the Fridge

One of the best ways to establish a new habit is to build on an existing routine.

Trash day comes on the same day every week. It is a routine. Cleaning out food from the fridge that is growing as a science project is a task that you often procrastinate doing until you can ignore it no longer.  It is a task that would be the most effective as a routine. Since trash day is a routine that has already been established for you, build on that and try to make trash day (or the day before trash day) your routine day for cleaning out the fridge. This gives you a natural weekly reminder as well as an efficient way to not stink up the garage with the old food.

*Tip – To simplify this routine even more, read my easy idea for date-labeling food.

(Deep Cleaning) Window Washing

windowsOur days of warm weather are numbered now, making it a good time to think about tackling some of those last seasonal outdoor chores. The upcoming weekend might be a good opportunity to do just that!

Washing the windows is a warm-weather chore that the whole family can take part in. And don’t spend a lot of money on cleaning products. A hose, a few towels and microfiber cloths, or even just newspaper and some water in a spray bottle is all you need to get the job done.

On the cold winter days when you are housebound tucked into your cozy home, you will have a whole new appreciation for your clean windows.

(Deep Cleaning) Lamp Shades

lampCleaning your lamp shades is your deep cleaning task for the week!

*Tip – Use a lint brush on your cloth shades and just a damp cloth on shades with a smooth surface.

(Home Management) Maximum Impact Cleaning

Maximum impact cleaning is actually a cleaning strategy that my husband taught me. It is a simple concept that I now apply each time I am picking up the house.

When you do a pick-up sweep of the house or even just a room, look for the one thing you can do or pick up that will make the most impact. If you had time to only put away one item, what would make the biggest difference? Making the bed or picking up the dirty socks? Putting the blocks back in the bin or returning a couple of books to the bookshelf? The visible progress will be energizing and it also allows you to get the maximum amount done in case you are interrupted before your cleaning spree is complete.

It is a simple way of getting more bang for your cleaning buck.

(Deep Cleaning) Dining Table

diningroomVery few surfaces in our homes are cleaned as frequently as the table top. But when was the last time you cleaned the rest of the table? You know, that spot under the table where your child wipes his hands when you aren’t looking, the back of the chairs where sticky fingers have been, or that place on the table leg where spaghetti sauce dried on its way to the floor? And if you are like me, you might be surprised at how much dust has accumulated on the chair rungs.

So this week, take a few minutes and a damp cloth to those forgotten surfaces and make your table shine.

(Home Management) Lightbulbs

Sometimes we don’t realize that we are living in the dark until somebody turns on a light.

Go around your house this week and replace all of the dead light bulbs. It is likely that you will have to purchase some new light bulbs to finish the task; just be sure to make a detailed list of the type, wattage, and quantity you need before you go.

Shed new light on your home.

(Deep Cleaning) Magic Eraser

Two words: Magic Eraser. If you have not yet discovered this mommy-must-have, you need to add this cheap product to your cleaning tool belt. My favorite part (other than the whole “magic eraser” part) is that they are chemical free. You just dampen the special sponge and erase away!

Your deep cleaning task this week is to “magic erase” your home. Wipe off the scratches and marks from your walls, baseboards, and doors. If you are like me, you have probably gotten to the point where you don’t even notice the marks on your walls. However, I can guarantee that you will notice their absence.

(Deep Cleaning) Door Knobs

Door knobs are a forgotten surface in the house; a surface that probably sees more traffic than the bathroom.

This week, your deep cleaning task is to clean all of the door knobs in your house. Simply take a cloth and a glass cleaner or a mild all-purpose formula and do a quick wipe down.

Deep Cleaning Task

Clean off the top of your fridge.

Remove the unnecessary clutter and wipe it down with a damp cloth. And don’t forget to dust off the flour and sugar canisters you have up there!
